Susan's Story, Our Indian Ocean Sands & Safaris Adventure

At the top of our agenda in Cape Town would be a visit to Robben Island to see where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 of his 26 years in prison. The island had been used as a penal colony since the 1600's. It also had been used to isolate the mentally ill and as a lepar colony. In WWII large guns were manned by South African and British sailors to defend the shipping lanes. We saw Nelson Mandela's cell and the home so-long inhabited by Robert Sobukwe in isolation. We were led by a former political prisoner. A world heritage site. Very moving! /susan
