On 2/22/01 our AIMS group visited and inspected Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia and were impressed with how busy it was. This is the busiest hospital in Denpasar which is the largest city on Bali with a population of more than a million people. The hospital is almost hidden from the road but is immense at 787 beds. Over 200 private physicians work here. There are 20 beautiful private rooms with doors opening onto a courtyard with the nursing station as a separate building in the courtyard. We wanted to see where the action really was happening so we went to triage. There are 2 ER's, medical and surgical. There are many motorcycle accidents on Bali and several victims were in the ER. The nursery was busy and a delivery was taking place exactly as we walked in.. Dr.A.A.J. Dewanto Dipa, an internist, was our host for the day. I was especially interested in the recompression (hyperbaric) chamber that was donated by Americans. The hospital is suffering financially and interestingly, Americans have left the hospital with some very large bills as they insist that "everything" be done but find their insurance doesn't pay outside of the US. The local people have no national health plan unless they work for a large company and since the don't want to have a huge debt, these people are less pushy for all the frills. Interesting. There is a small mix eastern medicine with allipathic (western) medicine at the hospital.
