Parker Cross is Born 12/20/2006

When I checked in at 6pm on 12/20 in Labor & Delivery and was receiving report from Dr. Jim Scardo, I was told one of my friends was on the service in premature labor at 31 weeks. I couldn't imagine who he was talking about as most of our friends have white hair like I do. He then told me that her husband had saved my life on July 4th. It had to be Kristie Cross from Columbia who, along with Jay her husband, paddled the Nolichucky with me that day. She was working in Spartanburg that day & had to come to Spartanburg Regional Center for Women & was admitted. I went in & stayed a while. Her cell phone was dead so I loaned her mine. We got in touch with Jay & got someone to bring him. He arrived just as her baby's heart slowded and almost stopped. We rushed Kristie into the operating room for most expedited cesarean most people had ever seen. Kristie is tough. She let me start surgery before the anesthesiologist had put her to sleep. I knew someone who could handle class IV whitewater in a little kayak was tough enough & she was. Baby Parker was resuscitated & did well. He weighed 2#15oz and was born at 9:47pm. I took Jay into the intensive care nursery to see that Parker was alright. In the recovery room I explained that Parker would be in the hospital here for a long time and that Kristie would need to come home from the hospital to my house in Spartanburg & live for a while so she would be close. What's more, Susan & I were leaving 12/22 for Louisville, KY to have Christmas with the family & then going to Mexico to SCUBA dive & so would be gone a long time. Parker did well & Kristie went to our hose in Spartanburg on the Saturday before Christmas as did her whole family. When we got back from Mexico on 1/2 only Kristie was still at our house. Susan & I checked Kristie & she had done well from her surgery. The next day Parker was well enough to be transferred to Richland Memorial in columbia & Kristie drove herself home. Parker & Kristie have done well & Parker was allowed to go home the first week in February on a monitor. We appreciate Kristie's reports on the progress. Hurry & grow Parker so you can paddle whitewater with us!!!!
